Truly one of the defining aspects of a great city is what happens outside the city center.  Think Lincoln Park in Chicago, Georgetown in Washington DC, or just about any named area of San Fran or New York.  This is where you break away from the norm and find the city's true pulse, the feel of the residents and the vibrant culture of diversity.  Neighborhood pubs, funky art shops, architects and designers, local music, and of course individual restaurants focusing on quality and treating guests right.
